Unlicensed, and what that actually means

Pokaia Ltd operates an unlicensed cafe at 10 Crown Walk, Newmarket CB8 8NG. Its recorded activity is unlicensed restaurants and cafes (SIC 56102).

Unlicensed is a legal description, not a gap. Selling alcohol in England and Wales requires a premises licence under the Licensing Act 2003 and a designated premises supervisor holding a personal licence. We hold neither, we are not applying for either, and no alcohol is sold on these premises. Nothing on this website offers alcohol and nothing on it should be read as doing so. The practical effect is a room that is the same room at nine in the morning and at five in the afternoon, which is the point.

Allergens are the thing we take most seriously and the thing we are most careful not to overstate. Food businesses must provide information on the fourteen allergens regulated under assimilated Regulation (EU) 1169/2011, and for food that is not pre-packed that information can be given in writing or verbally, provided it is clearly signposted. We will give it to you for anything we serve. What we will not do is tell you a dish is free from an allergen when it is made in a kitchen where that allergen is handled. Nuts in particular are handled here. If your allergy is severe, tell us before you order and we will give you a straight answer, including “we cannot be sure” where that is the truth.

Food businesses must be registered with their local authority, must operate permanent procedures based on HACCP principles, and are inspected and rated under the Food Hygiene Rating Scheme. This website does not state a hygiene rating, because a rating printed on a website is whatever the business last chose to print. Look the premises up on the Food Standards Agency’s own ratings service, where the current rating is published and cannot be edited by us.
